Adopting China's abandoned girls, local couple: “It's wonderful”

Seventeen years ago, Mr. and Mrs. Floyd of Los Angeles flew halfway around the world to China to meet their first daughter. “There were a lot of uncertainties—we didn't know how this new child would change our life,” Mrs. Floyd recalled.

Fast forward to today. Mr. and Mrs. Floyd are now certain that their two daughters adopted from China are the most wonderful part of their lives.

Once again it's almost Chinese new year. Once again I, a reporter for a Chinese-language media, found myself writing stories about Chinese American gambling and buying lottery as part of the Chinese new year tradition.

At a lucky retailer at East Los Angeles, I asked a Chinese elder who bought a lot of lottery tickets, "do you think you'll win?" He grinned, "Well, I have hope. Well, it's America--it's the land of opportunity."

The land of opportunity. Well said. I don't believe in lottery, but I believe in land of opportunity.

又到了急景凋年的時候。 

在移民聚居的洛杉磯，華人區的年味還是很重；華文媒體更少不了應景的年節相關報導。

華人過年喜歡小賭怡情試手氣，賭場懂得設立華人博彩專區吸引華人賭客、州政府也懂得推出蛇年幸運彩券搶攻華人市場。曾小貓近來也寫了幾篇關於華人過年，愛買彩券、愛上賭場的報導，還被中國大陸的中新社、網易新聞、搜狐新聞等新聞網站大量轉載，可見這的確是一個普遍引起共鳴的現象。 

去採訪的時候，曾小貓在華裔聚居的San Gabriel Valley一處彩券銷售站，向一位買了好幾張彩券的華人老者搭訕：「阿伯常常買彩票嗎，有中獎嗎？」阿伯咧嘴道，「買個希望嘛，美國是機會之地啊！」

好個機會之地。曾小貓不相信彩票，但相信機會之地。 

擦香水？禁止進入！ Wearing Perfume? You're not allowed in here.

今年夏天，全美各地多個公家機關和私人企業紛紛開始禁用香水，引起廣泛討論。曾小貓注意到這個現象，並為文報導，但編輯認為有攻擊愛用香水人士之嫌，不予採用。不過，小貓自問這篇報導相當中肯，不但廣納各方言，而且為了貼近我們華文報紙的讀者，還特別採訪了華裔禮儀專家。過後不久，各主流媒體上也陸續出現相關報導，可見此事的確引發關注，但是小貓的報導還是沒能上報。不受編輯青睞是無可奈何之事，幸好還有部落格，就在此貼文以饗讀者吧～

奧克拉荷馬州Tuttle市政府，今年7月起明令禁止市政府員工擦香水和鬍後水上班，也禁止訪客擦香水來訪市政廳 ，甚至在市政廳前張貼告示「擦香水者請止步」。 

Tuttle市政經理Tim Young表示，有民眾抗議這個規定很 「蠢」，但是市政廳堅持執行，因為「無香水的清淨空氣對越來越多的鼻過敏患者來說，是一種解脫。」
